For the past 19 years Pantone has provided a snapshot of our times in the form of a single color. The Pantone’s Color of the Year is named as a representation of the zeitgeist.
This year at Art Basel Miami, the 2019 Pantone Color of the Year was named. What is the color of 2019? The color is “Living Coral“. We like to say we’re ahead of the curve because Living Coral has been used on our site since our launch earlier this year.
Living Coral is a peachy shade of orange. The color is a contrast from last year’s UltravViolet (which you can find in our logo and website). Living Coral represents playfulness, energy, and a connection with nature. The overriding theme for this year’s selection is the environment.
What brought the color to the attention of the color wizards at Pantone? It was its appearance in fashion, interior decorating, corporate branding, and technology. Its usage in the tech industry is particularly interesting because of the connection with nature.
The nature and technology interaction led people to ask themselves if technology was trying to fuse nature and technology or are we merely taking the color from nature. The standout tech item is the new iPhone XR.
All the focus on energy and happiness doesn’t mean that the current global political climate and ongoing climate change did not enter the minds of those selecting the color. However, the attraction to the public for bright and natural colors like Living Coral is perceived to be a method of escaping the more grim and negative aspects of our daily lives.
What do you think about Pantone’s Color of the Year 2019? We like it here at 3 Cats Labs, but we liked it before it was even named color of the year. Is this a color that attracts you?
