The Bluetooth logo, we see it daily, and most of us probably looked at it and thought, “Ah, a pointy B. Cool.” Many of us probably haven’t looked at the logo and considered where the elements of the Bluetooth logo design come from. However, 20 years on and people are just now learning the story behind the Bluetooth logo and the origin of the name.
The Name
The name Bluetooth, according to one of the engineers, is derived from a viking king who had a bad tooth. Also, like many of the best logo designs, the Bluetooth logo hides a secret connected to the name.
Sven Mattison and Jim Kardach were developing the technology in the 1990’s when they decided it needed a name to make it stand out from other wireless technologies that was being developed, and like many of history’s best ideas, Bluetooth was born over some beers.
Fance24 reported that they were discussing history while drinking beers after a failed pitch. They were diving deep into he subject of vikings and talked about the Danish king, Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson. The nickname of Bluetooth refers to Harald’s dead tooth.
Harald is most famous for uniting Norway and Denmark. This paralleled the pair’s vision of uniting the PC and cellular industries with a wireless link.
The Bluetooth Logo
We mentioned earlier that the Bluetooth logo holds a secret. That secret is that the logo design is made of a superimposition of two Nordic letters. Bet you thought that was just a stylized “B”, didn’t you?
The Nordic letters are for Harald Bluetooth.
We all love discovering hidden meanings or messages in logo designs. The Bluetooth hidden message is just becoming a big thing on Twitter in March 2021. Many of us already know about the Amazon smile or the classed FedEx arrow. But for you reader, you will never be able to look at the Bluetooth logo the same as you did before reading this article.
