Blue jeans and blueberries represent the Pantone Color of the Year 2020. While looking at a future with seeming instability at every turn. the Color Oracles at Pantone believe going with Classic Blue will bring society some stability.
Social media is breeding anxiety for people daily. We’re addicted to our phones, secretly yearning for the next notification. People are more connected than ever, but personal relationships are weakening. Autocrats are on the rise and global politics seems to be tipping the world upside down. Every day we have to sift through real information and the products churned out by mass propaganda factories.
“We landed back on the blue family, where we’ve been and where we are,” says Pantone Color Institute VP Linda Pressman. “Just not knowing where to go and who to trust…[blue is] the feeling of calm and reassurance that help us have that confidence to move forward.”
Last year, Pantone’s Color of the Year was Living Coral. Living Coral was selected because it is a color that is energizing yet also calming. Classic Blue is a choice that runs along a similar vein of thinking.
“Classic Blue is the color of the sky at dusk,” Pressman says. Symbolically, it’s a color of fresh starts. Also because it’s the sky, it’s a color everyone sees and is a color that transcends cultures.
Just because the color is now officially the Pantone Color of the Year 2020, that doesn’t mean it’s just appearing now. It’s a color that has already been appearing on catwalks across the fashion world. It’s also a safe color for livening up interiors. All white kitchens have been a running trend for interior design, and now we have a color to add some life to all white rooms, but without feeling like we’re taking a risk.
You might not agree with the psychology behind the selection of Classic Blue for Pantone Color of the Year, but you can’t argue that the choice isn’t a safe one. But that’s the point. Classic Blue is the color of jeans, something everyone knows. You can’t get any safer than that.
